Why Ghana

Why families choose Ghana

Ghana has offered IVF since 1995, its law already recognises surrogacy, and treatment costs a fraction of what it does in the US or Europe. Here is the full picture, including the parts you should think about carefully.

A law that recognises surrogacy

The Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 2020 (Act 1027) recognises intended parents and sets out a court process, the Pre-Birth Parental Order, that names you as the legal parent before your baby is born.

Thirty years of IVF experience

Ghana's first IVF baby was born in Tema in 1995. Today, experienced specialists and embryologists in Accra offer IVF, ICSI, embryo freezing and genetic testing, including testing embryos for sickle cell disease.

A fraction of the cost

Hospital care, laboratory work and professional fees cost less to provide here. A full surrogacy journey in Ghana costs a fraction of the same journey in the United States, without lowering the standard of screening or care.

English, and on GMT

English is Ghana's official language, so every consultation, agreement and medical report is in English. Ghana is on GMT all year, which keeps calls simple for families in the UK and Europe.

Easy to reach

Kotoka International Airport in Accra has direct flights from London, Amsterdam, Istanbul, Dubai, New York and many African cities. ECOWAS citizens need no visa, and since May 2026 all African passport holders get their Ghana visa free of charge.

Stable and welcoming

Ghana is one of West Africa's most stable democracies, with peaceful changes of government at the ballot box. Akwaaba, meaning welcome, is the word most visitors remember.

The honest part

What to think about carefully

Ghana is a good choice for many families, not for every family. These are the questions we would want you to settle before you start.

The law is still developing

Act 1027 covers parentage and birth registration, but Ghana does not yet have a single surrogacy law. An Assisted Reproductive Technology Bill has been under debate since 2024. We follow it closely and will tell you if anything changes for your journey.

Your home country matters as much as Ghana

How you are recognised as the parent, and how your baby gets a passport, depends on your own country's rules. Some countries expect steps before conception. Speak to a family lawyer at home before you commit.

Standards vary between agencies and hospitals

Ask who does the medical work, how surrogates and donors are screened and paid, and for every cost in writing before you pay anything. Ask us the same questions.

  • A written, itemised cost breakdown before you pay anything
  • Screened surrogates and donors, with counselling before anyone signs
  • Our lawyer handles the Pre-Parental Order and the paperwork after the birth
